A Lesson From a Deacon to a Pastor

Hello Friend,

As I sit in my easy chair tonight, I have a lot on my mind.  Tomorrow (Wednesday), an elderly deacon from my church is about to face a surgery that his doctors say could very well send him on to Glory.  I have known this man for all of 20 months and yet in that short time, I have witnessed his wisdom and passion for the Lord.  He and I have rejoiced together at seeing several souls accept Jesus as Savior and we have mourned at the passing of his beloved wife.

In knowing this man,I have learned many valuable lessons and one in particular I'd like to share with you.   Life is precious. Every minute you exist is a gift from Almighty God.  Some are given many years while others are called home far too soon (in our estimation).  Every hardship you face sets your life at a turning point.  How you respond determines your direction.  Seeking fulfillment in earthly things leaves us feeling like Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones in the song, "Satisfaction".  We can't get any! When we seek after the things of God, we stand a far better chance of discovering the satisfaction we truly desire.

In one of my most recent discussions with this deacon he said, "I'm ready to cross chilly Jordan, but if the Lord decides to keep me around I will just keep sharing Him with those who cross my path.".  Friend, that is the Godly wisdom Solomon encouraged his sons to seek out and bind them to their hearts in Proverbs 3.  It is also a reminder of the words of the Apostle Paul who exclaimed in Philippians 1:21 "For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain".   This deacon has experienced the ups and downs of life and has remained a faithful servant of his Lord and his church.   He has witnessed tirelessly to friends and strangers alike and prays for the Lord's will to be done above his own.  He knows the value of life and has made the wise choice that ETERNAL LIFE is the most precious asset in his estate.

I want to encourage you to embrace the lessons of my deacon's example.  Don't let the troubles of the day make you place a lower value on your life.  Your life is precious but your eternal life is so priceless that God sent His beloved Son, Jesus to die on a cross for your salvation!  Even in the face of great danger, if you will trust in Jesus Christ you will discover the peace and satisfaction you've been looking for!

(That goes for you too Mr. Jagger!)

God bless you all & I pray you seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness!

Brad Sloan, Pastor
